Frieze London 2026: three starting points for a closer look

Frieze London returns to Regent’s Park from 14 to 18 October 2026, with 172 galleries from 42 countries and regions announced. Ahead of the opening, these three approaches offer a way to build a visit around the works themselves.

Focus: step into another setting

Focus brings together 35 young galleries. At Bukia Vakhania, Tamo Jugeli presents five new paintings within a domestic interior. With Public, Steph Huang plays with the scale of familiar objects, including a bar cart and oversized olives.

What interests us here is the role of the setting. Recognising an object or feeling that one has entered a room can be a simple starting point. Looking longer reveals what has made that familiar experience strange.

The Code Universe: reconsidering materials

New this year, The Code Universe is curated by Carol Yinghua Lu. It examines connections between art, popular culture and the circulation of objects. Selma Selman, shown by acb Gallery, paints on discarded metal; Shinro Ohtake, with greengrassi and Take Ninagawa, works with collected fragments and printed ephemera.

Together, these approaches suggest a useful question: when does an ordinary material become something we want to look at, keep or pass on? Visitors need not arrive at an answer to find the works rewarding.

Dalton Paula: making room for individual histories

For his Lisson presentation, Dalton Paula brings together six paintings on canvas and a work from his Retrato Silenciado series. At its centre is Luiz Gama, the Brazilian lawyer, writer and abolitionist. The new still lifes connect everyday objects with the transmission of knowledge and the memory of emancipation.

A chair may suggest an absent body, food an offering, and a book the histories from which certain lives were omitted. We would make this a deliberate pause in the visit: looking at these details, then reading the gallery’s account, can take the experience beyond a first impression.
